Possible Link Between Zinc Deficiency and Tinnitus

It is estimated that about 17 out of every 100 people suffer some degree of tinnitus. Here in America, about 50 million American’s experience tinnitus. Some research is now showing that many of the people who suffer from tinnitus symptoms are also showing signs of mineral deficiency.
Doctors have estimated that 31% of ringing in ear sufferers have severe tinnitus and are also zinc-deficient. Some also suffer from a lack of appetite, hair loss and skin problems. All of these symptoms are directly related to a zinc deficiency.
It is known that animals that are deficient in zinc partially lose their ability to hear. Zinc is also responsible for maintaining healthy cell membranes and protecting cells from oxygen-related damage.
To help alleviate the ringing in ear taking zinc supplements and/or maintaining a zinc rich diet would be extremely helpful. Foods which are rich in zinc are pork, chicken, clams, salmon and lobster. For you vegetarians, they are cheese, beans, peanuts, wholegrain cereals, milk and yogurt.
Before to taking extra zinc supplements it is highly recommended that you check with your doctor so that it can be determined if you are zinc-deficient. Although zinc is important for your body having or taking an excessive amount may be more harmful than helpful.
